The food tray comes 4.5 inches above the KitchenAid's highest point. There was a noticeable difference between each grind size, with the biggest jump from medium to coarse. I put the attachment through its paces by grinding two pounds of beef chuck with each of the grinding plates and making chicken-apple sausage. The grinding screw slots into the attachment body, followed by the blade, grinding plate, and collar that keeps everything together.Įven with several connection points, the attachment felt secure and steady during testing. I appreciated how easy it was to put the parts together, thanks to the clear instructions in the manual. Having never ground meat before, this attachment was the most foreign and intimidating to me. Pros: Durable metal construction, easy to set up, smooth grinding action If you're new to grinding meat, the KitchenAid attachment is easy to set up and clean, and provides an even grind. If you're not shredding too often and don't want another appliance, this attachment is a good compromise. Additionally, the price is comparable to other small food processors. This significantly slows down the shredding process not only because you are dealing with fewer vegetables at a time, but also because you may have to stop and recut your pieces.ĭesign flaws aside, this attachment does work as intended and is much easier to clean than a box grater. At only 1.5 inches wide, vegetables have to be cut into thin sticks. I found that this is not a controlled fall, and if you don't use a bowl with tall enough sides, wayward pieces will end up on the floor and countertop.Īnother issue was the small feeder opening. The shredded material comes out of the horizontal tube and drops into your bowl from almost a foot above the counter. The attachment is basically made up of two perpendicular tubes – the vertical one holds the feeder, where you insert whatever you're shredding, and the horizontal one holds (and rotates) the blade. However, issues with the design brought this attachment down in my rankings. It did its job, slicing and shredding evenly sized and shaped pieces of carrots, mozzarella cheese, and Yukon potatoes. This attachment did not stand out among the others I tested. The KitchenAid Shredder/Slicer Attachment is a solid option for low volume and occasional shredding, but go with a food processor if you're looking for greater efficiency and capacity. Though the blades are top-rack dishwasher safe, they were perfectly clean after blasting them with water and some light scrubbing with a scouring pad. The spiralizer does come out the furthest from the stand mixer out of the attachments I tested, but since it doesn't add height and you can place a bowl directly under it, I found it easy to manage.Įach of the four blades powered through apples, zucchini, and white potatoes easily, creating fun and evenly shaped spirals. It's easy to put together – after you attach the main body to the mixer, you just slot in the skewer and blade. The seven-piece sets also include thin slicing blades and extra-fine spiralizing blades. I tested the five-piece set that includes small and large core slicing blades, a peeling blade, and medium and fine spiralizing blades. The KitchenAid spiralizer attachment has three parts: the attachment's main body, the skewer, and the blade. Spiralizing can help diversify the way you treat produce by allowing you to turn zucchini into noodles or make tornado potatoes at home. Pros: Simple construction, blades work smoothly through apples, zucchini, and potatoesĬons: Blades have trouble with tougher produce Switch up how you cook produce with the KitchenAid Spiralizer attachment – the blades easily pass through zucchini, apples, and more. To put these attachments to the test, we ground two pounds of meat, made fresh spaghetti and fettuccine, shred enough carrots to make family-style coleslaw, and more. The attachments slot into the port in the front of your mixer and extend upwards or outwards. One thing we noticed about all the attachments is that you need at least a foot of space directly in front of and above of your stand mixer. Since most are versions of standalone kitchen appliances, we also considered why one might buy a KitchenAid attachment instead. We tested five popular attachments to see how well they performed their specific functions and how easy they were to use, clean, and store. There are 16 attachments that connect through the mixer's front port, as well as other accessories like ice cream bowls and pastry beaters. With KitchenAid attachments, the dough-kneading and egg-white-whipping workhorse can turn into a pasta maker, food processor, meat grinder, and more. For many home cooks, the KitchenAid stand mixer is their most valued possession.

In the area of civil rights, some progress had been achieved, but these successes had come mostly in spite of-not because of-the White House. More importantly, the administration apparently had no realistic plan to resolve the conflict. Throughout the summer and fall of 1963, the situation in South Vietnam deteriorated by the end of Kennedy's presidency, 16,000 US military “advisers” had been dispatched to the country. And the work of civil rights activists and the occasional limited intervention of the federal government were slowly, but nevertheless steadily, wearing down the power of Southern segregationists.īut serious issues remained. Long-running, difficult negotiations finally resulted in a partial nuclear test ban treaty. Skillful statesmanship-and some luck-led to notable success in the showdown over Cuba. That impression began to change in the fall of 1962. A particularly difficult Cold War climate abroad, an antagonistic Congress at home, increasingly bold activist groups agitating for change, and a discouraging economic outlook all contributed to an increasingly negative view of the Kennedy White House. By the summer of 1962, the administration was in trouble. Many voters yearned for the dynamism that Kennedy's youth and politics implied, but others worried that Kennedy's inexperience made him a poor choice to lead the nation during such a challenging time.Įarly errors in judgment, particularly in the Bay of Pigs fiasco, seemingly confirmed these fears. Style became an essential complement to substance.īefore winning the presidency, Kennedy had lived a life of privilege and comfort, and his relatively short congressional career had been unremarkable. Television began to have a real impact on voters and long, drawn-out election campaigns became the norm. Kennedy played a role in revolutionizing American politics. It was, in the words of one notable biographer, “an unfinished life.” For that reason, assessments of the Kennedy presidency remain mixed. Kennedy had promised much but never had the opportunity to see his program through. The space agency says the asteroid has the potential to hit Earth on February 14, 2046. NASA orbit analysts said they will continue to monitor the asteroid and update predictions as more data comes in. NASA discovered the asteroid, dubbed 2023 DW, on February 26. NASA officials give it a 1 in 560 chance of impacting Earth. "Often when new objects are first discovered, it takes several weeks of data to reduce the uncertainties and adequately predict their orbits years into the future," the agency said Tuesday.Īsteroid 2023 DW is currently at the top of NASA’s Earth impact monitoring list with a 1 out of 10 on the Torino scale, which means there is no cause for the public to worry. NASA's Planetary Defense Coordination Office said they have been tracking a new asteroid named 2023 DW that has a very small chance of impacting Earth on Feb. These objects are defined as asteroids that are more than about 460 feet (140 meters) in size with orbits that bring them as close as within 4.6 million miles (7.5 million kilometers) of Earth’s orbit around the Sun. When an NEO is discovered by a survey, additional telescopes are used to follow-up those discoveries (watch NASA Planetary Defense: Backyard Asteroid Observer) and add position measurements to the Minor Planet Center, which the Center for Near-Earth Object Studies (CNEOS) uses to compute a precise orbit and predict the NEO’s trajectory well in. With graphics card prices close to normal in 2023, however, UHD 770 will more likely fill the traditional role of an integrated GPU, namely to provide a backup plan in case your video card dies suddenly. Unless you’re content running games at sub-60 frames per second, you’d do a lot better opting for one of AMD’s APUs like the Ryzen 5 3400G, Ryzen 5 5600G or Ryzen 7 5700G if you simply can’t find an affordable graphics card. There’s no doubt that Intel’s integrated graphics have improved since last generation, but even so UHD 770 graphics aren’t enough to warrant a purchase in and of themselves. Gameĭespite Alder Lake’s graphical improvement over Intel’s 11th-gen, AMD’s APUs still best Intel’s by an impressive average of 15.3%. It’s worth noting that the newer Ryzen 5 5600G and Ryzen 7 5700G will perform similarly to the 3400G. Next, we’ll compare UHD 770 graphics to AMD’s competing Vega graphics, those of the Ryzen 5 3400G. While they’re markedly better, they fail to achieve the desired 60FPS minimum in many AAA titles. Overall, then, UHD 770 graphics outperformed UHD 750 by an average of 15%. Horizon Zero Dawn (1280x720 Low Settings) Red Dead Redemption 2 (1280x720 Low Settings)įortnite Performance Mode (1920x1080 Low Settings) In-game framerates recorded by Benchmark Lab give us these results: Game While UHD 770 certainly improves upon its predecessor, it doesn’t do so by enough of a margin to ensure 60FPS in the majority of AAA games, which would be ideal. Thus, figures for the i7-12700K or i9-12900K can be expected to be marginally higher. UHD 770 BenchmarksĪll UHD 770 benchmarks displayed directly below were recorded by Zax Game Inn on the lowest in-game settings in 1080p on the Core i5-12600K. UHD 770 will therefore be most commonly used in the i5-12600K as a stop-gap GPU (for temporary use while waiting to upgrade to a discrete graphics card). What’s more, hardly anyone with the means to purchase an i9-13900K will be making use of integrated graphics, as they’ll almost certainly use a high-end dedicated GPU. While this may seem like a sizable difference, the 12600K costs less than half of the 13900K. The UHD 770 GPUs packed into Intel’s newest 13th-gen Raptor Lake processors feature slightly faster boost clocks while retaining the same 300MHz base frequency: The Core i5-13600K has a max graphics dynamic frequency of 1.5GHz, the Core i5-13700K 1.6GHz, and the Core i9-13900K the maximum of 1.65GHz.Įven then, the Core i9-13900K’s pack-leading boost frequency is only 22.2% better than the lowest-end UHD 770-equipped Core i5-12600K. That’s a small 7.5% jump in performance from the Core i5-12600K to the top-of-the-line Core i9-12900K, for a rough 177% increase in cost. While all three 12th-gen models have GPU base-clocks of 300MHz, the boost clocks of the i5-12600K, i7-12700K, and i9-12900K GPUs are 1.35 GHz, 1.4GHz, and 1.45 GHz, respectively. How big will this difference be? Rather miniscule. In other words, integrated graphics performance will vary slightly between lower and higher-end models. Whereas all graphics-equipped 11th-gen CPUs, from the i5-11600K to the i9-11900K had GPUs with the same 350MHz base and 1.3GHz boost frequencies, Alder Lake’s GPUs vary slightly in frequency. UHD 770 differs a bit from the 11th generation’s UHD 750 graphics in that there is some variation in clock speeds between models. The latest Raptor Lake 13th-gen Intel processor likewise employ UHD 770 integrated graphics, so the Core i5-13600K, Core i7-13700K, and Core i9-13900K are equipped with the same GPU as their most recent predecessors. Meanwhile, Intel’s lower-end 12th-gen SKUs, the Core i3-12100 and Core i5-12400 surprisingly feature same UHD 730 graphics as the Core i5-11400. Intel only includes a functional GPU in non-F series CPUs, so of the Alder Lake models only the i5-12600K, i7-12700K, and i9-12900K feature UHD 770 graphics. This is an upgrade over Rocket Lake’s UHD 750 graphics, which we reviewed and benchmarked earlier this year. With the release of Intel’s 12th generation of processors on November 4, 2021, consumers also gained access to Intel’s latest revision of integrated graphics, dubbed UHD 770. Somehow a mysterious, Lavoriesque connection seems to have been made between author and text: First Draft of the Revolution is far too short. I'm gushing, I know, but I can't help myself because First Draft is a delight. It reminds us that writing allows us both to reveal and to conceal ourselves, and if there's any magic left in the world at all, then it's in writing that we'll find it. This game - or interactive text, or thaumaturgico-digital wonder - is a demonstration of the power and the complexity of writing. Is there a better way to reveal someone's quirks, foibles, hopes and anxieties than to let you dig into their very thought-process as they write? I'm gonna say no, there isn't. You're looking over their shoulders - or perhaps inside their heads - as they draft and redraft letters to each other. You literally touch and manipulate the text as it's being written by the characters in the story. This is interactive fiction at its most literal and yet its most brilliant. I was reminded of the film Dangerous Liaisons, and particularly of the character of the Marquise, when I read about (or wrote?!) the letter in which Alise reappraises her sister-in-law, towards the end of the game. I now know that this was terribly remiss of me.įirst Draft is beautifully presented and boasts an intuitive user-interface that effortlessly draws you into a story of power, intrigue, assignations, politics, religion and magic. I'd played a few games by Emily Short before, but none that were set in the Lavori universe of First Draft. First Draft, however, combines these elements very deftly. Plots centered around awoman dealing with a troubled marriage and learning to stand up for herself are not very often found in worlds that also have tensions between magic-using aristocrats and generally non-magical commoners about to erupt into revolution. It’s not all that common to see alternate-universe or secondary-world fantasy stories that deal primarily with small-scale personal dramas. Reviews of Best Story Nominees (Emma Joyce) Eventually, we might hope for some sort of equilibrium, but as I’ve said, we’re far from there yet. People in power fall, and new people come to take their place, and so it goes on and on forever. The fact that we can’t change this outcome feels significant. There are hints that this family is eventually going to fall from grace, which feels oddly satisfying to me I’ve always had more sympathy for the underdog team, and I guess that holds even if I haven’t technically been on said team. Reviews of Best Story Nominees (Deirdra Kiai) I’d love to see Emily Short, or someone else if need be, take this mechanic and run with it, because my god does it have legs as a storytelling form. It’s at moments like these that the strength of the mechanic really hits home, both as a way of furthering narrative, and as a way of exploring characters, relationships, and societal pressures in intelligent, affecting ways. The production of the app by Liza Daly is also beautiful and well-polished. It's a unique mechanic and a refreshing take on interactive text. The process of revision and the many small and large decisions (about how much detail to include, whether a certain phrasing goes too far or not far enough, what tone a sentence should take, and so on) reveal a deeper layer of the characters than is found purely in the text of the letters themselves. Rather than control the main character or choose between branches of story, here the reader's agency concerns how the characters choose to express themselves through their writing. Par exemple, Juliette commence souvent par écrire un brouillon où elle est fâchée contre son mari, puis le modifie petit à petit pour le rendre plus poli et masquer sa colère.įirst Draft of the Revolution is an entire game based around valuing the reader-player’s aesthetic sensibilities, another triumph of Emily Short’s genius for narrative mechanics.įirst Draft of the Revolution is an odd game because rather than entering text in this adventure, you’re editing it. On s'en rend compte lorsque le jeu nous propose de modifier certains passages ou d'effacer certaines phrases. Principles of parabolic reflectors Stutzman&Thiele A paraboloidal surface is described by the equation (see plot b) 2 4 F( F ),a. Other common reflectors are: cylindrical, corner, and spherical. SUNBOUNCE offers a huge selection of frames and a comprehensive range of fabric light enhancing screens and fabrics for the photography and film industry. Translucent umbrellas are perfect to create soft light when you’re very close to your subject. The most common main reflector is the parabolic one. The shoot-through umbrellas (translucent) are used to shoot light through and they diffuse and soften the light by reducing contrast. The White reflects a more natural, softer light. When it comes to fabric, the Silver creates a very crisp, direct light with more contrast and a high light output, a little like the light you’d get from a hard reflector. Think of it like this – the larger the umbrella the softer the light will be. The size affects the softness and spread of light. The umbrellas comes in sizes from 85 cm to 165 cm. The Umbrella Deep, ideal when you want to control the light more precisely, and the Umbrella Shallow that are perfect for wide and even light spread. Also useful in studio photography, a good reflector can bounce, diffuse or flag natural and artificial light. Photo eyes, safety edges, induction loops, and other sensing mechanisms are designed to detect a potentially dangerous situation, such as a vehicle or pedestrian blocking the gate travel path, and either stopping or reversing the cycle of the gate depending on the direction of travel. Umbrellas are the backbone of many photographers’ toolboxes, understandably so, because they are easy to work with and ideal to bring on location. A photography reflector is an essential piece of kit to make the most of your natural light portrait photoshoots. |
